OKWU Men and Women's Basketball Soar to 1-0 Conference Start

Oklahoma Wesleyan hoops men’s and women’s started conference play strong hosting and defeating Southwestern College.

Starting with the Women’s game, Southwestern’s Christy Wiebe and Macey Pond willed the Lady Moundbuilders to a 33-30 halftime lead. Later finding a 51-41 lead in the third quarter before a Lady Eagle’s run lead by the defense of Jessa Gilyard who had three steals and four blocks sparking a 25-7 run to end the game. Gilyard also lead in scoring with her 14 points. 

Lady Eagles win 66-58 and improving to 2-3 on the year with a 1-0 conference record. 

Head Coach Heidi Messer had this to say about the game. 

The Men’s matchup featured two top 15 clash with #7 OKWU and #11 Southwestern. OKWU lead at the break 35-26. Southwestern would cut down its deficit to four-points several times. Austin Poling’s old fashioned three-point play would set the tone for the second half.

The Eagles would not let the Moundbuilders pull back in with a bucket and going on to win 77-63. 

Kaleb Stokes would lead the way in scoring with 21 points and in rebounds with 13. Jaden Lietzke would drop 19 points. 

The Men improve to 5-1 overall with a 1-0 conference record.

Both teams continue action Saturday with a trip to Kansas to take on McPherson.
