Indians Fall in Winget 5th Place Game

The Doenges Ford Indians ended the 65th Glen Winget Tournament with just one victory, as the Tribe was unable to grab fifth place on Sunday afternoon.

After going 1-1-1 in pool play, the Indians played Springfield Kickapoo for fifth place, but walks and free passes handed Kickapoo a 10-1 victory.

The game sounds more lopsided than it was. Despite some uneven pitching, the Indians kept hanging around in the opening three frames.

This double-play turned by Kael Siemers got Copan pitcher Zane Stricklin out of a jam in the second.

However, a missed opportunity at a double play in the next inning would help decide the game. Down 4-1 instead of turning two on a comebacker, everyone was safe. Kickapoo would go on to score six two-out runs and put the game away in five innings.

After trailing 4-0 into the third, Bartlesville’s bats would come alive with four base hits. The final one came from Eric Olenburger who drove in the lone Indian’s run of the game.

The Indians walked nine, hit two batters and committed two errors in the contest. The Tribe out-hit Kickapoo 6-4, with Olenburger being the only Indian with multiple hits. He also threw 1.1 scoreless innings on the mound in relief.

Bartlesville drops to 15-12-1 on the summer, and now only a couple weeks remain in the season.

The Indians travel to Independence, Kansas on Tuesday for another double-header, which will be Bartlesville’s only action this week. Another twin bill we will carry on KWON & KWONTV.com.

The Glen Winget finale would feature two Oklahoma teams. Both Three Rivers and Elk City won their semifinal matchups and played for the championship at around 6:15 on Sunday night, it was the Elk City Mudcats who won the 65th Winget.

Elk City topped the Bandits 6-4.
